Summary:

The Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona memory clinic has published a study showing that a short test of spontaneous speech through artificial intelligence (AI) is able to distinguish the degree of evolution in which this disease is found.

The finding is part of a work in which more than 1,500 patients have participated and which explores the association of language and cognitive performance to analyze the pathology.

With this discovery, AI tools can no longer only be used to analyze aspects such as attention, memory or special visual ability, but open the door to developing more effective treatments and advancing diagnosis. Based on spontaneous speech audio pieces of less than three minutes, paralinguistic parameters must be measured, those elements that affect language production, such as prosody, intonation or fluency. In this way, it has been possible to detect notable differences according to the phase of the disease’s evolution, including early detection stages where the symptoms are not yet manifested.

Since it is a pathology without a definitive cure, detecting it as soon as possible is of great importance for good medical care and using drugs that manage to slow down the rapid development.

The Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona study is part of the Tartaglia project, which aims to apply artificial intelligence to the Spanish National Health System. With this tool, as the researchers point out, an alternative is offered that is more accessible, easy to obtain and less invasive than other traditional methods. However, they insist that more studies should be carried out to confirm and expand the results and to evaluate the effectiveness by combining the data collected with other samples obtained.
