Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a slow-progressing cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, predominantly in older adults. Beyond the physical toll, over 20% of CLL patients suffer from anxiety and depression, stemming from the diagnosis. A lack of awareness about the disease often leaves family and friends unsure of how to support loved ones effectively.
To address this issue, BeiGene has launched the campaign “Words that Break Barriers,” aimed at raising awareness about CLL and promoting communication between patients and their caregivers. The initiative uses facial recognition technology to analyze emotions expressed through facial gestures. These emotions are then interpreted by artificial intelligence and transformed into words, which are delivered to the patient, helping to bridge emotional gaps.
The campaign emphasizes the emotional well-being of patients, a dimension often overshadowed by medical treatments. As CLL is a challenging disease, both physically and emotionally, this initiative fosters understanding and communication, helping patients feel supported by their loved ones during their journey. The use of AI in this campaign underlines the role of technology not just in improving treatment outcomes, but also in enhancing mental health.
