Apple has announced the launch of the Apple Health Study, a new initiative aimed at exploring how technology can enhance physical and mental health. Conducted in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, the study will leverage data from iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods to examine health trends and relationships, such as the link between mental health and heart rate or the impact of sleep on exercise.
Available through the Research app, the study builds on previous Apple-led health research, including the Apple Women’s Health Study and the Apple Heart and Movement Study, which have already engaged over 350,000 participants. By using Apple’s widely adopted technology, researchers can collect more comprehensive and real-time health data, overcoming traditional barriers in medical studies.
This virtual, longitudinal study will analyze various health areas, including cardiovascular health, cognition, mobility, respiratory health, and more. Apple emphasizes participant privacy, allowing users to control which data they share and opt out at any time.
Apple’s Vice President of Health, Sumbul Desai, highlighted the study’s role in expanding health insights, building upon innovations like the Vitals app on Apple Watch and Walking Steadiness on iPhone. The Apple Health Study is currently open for enrollment in the U.S. through the Research app, offering users an opportunity to contribute to medical research while maintaining control over their personal data.
