Cognitive decline often begins subtly, with minor memory lapses and difficulties in attention, language, and reasoning. While these signs do not always lead to dementia, they can indicate early issues such as Alzheimer’s.

Researchers at the University of Vigo, supported by Samsung, have developed The Mind Guardian, an AI-powered app designed to screen for early cognitive decline through a gamified experience. The app has demonstrated an impressive 97.1% accuracy in detecting early warning signs.

While The Mind Guardian does not provide a diagnosis, it serves as an early alert system. Users over 55 can complete a 45-minute test at home, eliminating the «white coat syndrome» that may impact clinical evaluations. If the test detects potential cognitive issues, the app recommends retesting in six months and provides cognitive health advice. Persistent issues prompt a visit to a medical professional.

Developed over a decade, the project began in 2014 when researchers identified video games as an effective tool for engaging older adults. After years of testing in senior centers and research institutions, the app was validated through European studies. Samsung Iberia partnered with the University of Vigo in 2022 to scale the project, emphasizing AI’s role in expanding healthcare accessibility.

Experts highlight that early detection enables lifestyle changes that can slow cognitive decline, reinforcing the importance of staying mentally, physically, and socially active.
