Sleep disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), are an increasing healthcare challenge due to their high prevalence and the negative impact of poor therapeutic adherence on both quality of life and public health. Despite the effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, a significant number of patients discontinue treatment due to lack of follow-up and adaptation.
To address this issue, Linde Médica has developed Airgenious, a groundbreaking initiative that combines a multicenter clinical trial and an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tool to improve patient adherence in those struggling with CPAP therapy. The clinical trial involves multiple Spanish hospitals, including the Hospital Universitario Sant Joan d’Alacant, and has shown promising results in predicting and preventing treatment abandonment.
Airgenious is the first AI algorithmic tool that predicts adherence in OSA patients using CPAP at home. By anticipating non-compliance, Airgenious allows for proactive, personalized interventions, helping to ensure better treatment adherence and reducing the risk of complications like cardiovascular issues, cognitive decline, and accidents.
Recently, Airgenious was awarded the «Prix Galien France» for digital innovation and the «Portugal Digital Awards 2024,» underscoring its potential to revolutionize the management of sleep disorders. According to Eusebi Chiner, head of Pulmonology at Hospital Universitario Sant Joan d’Alacant, the AI tool’s ability to detect low compliance patterns early ensures a faster and more efficient follow-up process.
Sergio García Ferrer, CEO of Linde Homecare Spain, highlighted that Airgenious addresses the core challenge in OSA therapy: ensuring long-term patient adherence. With this technology, the company can intervene before patients abandon treatment, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
In collaboration with the Hospital Universitario Sant Joan d’Alacant, Linde continues to strengthen its commitment to chronic respiratory disease management, providing holistic and personalized care across Spain through its network of more than 40 centers.
