Belgian startup Mirapulse is breaking new ground in women’s health with EVA, an innovative device designed to relieve severe period pain through a drug-free, non-surgical approach. EVA uniquely combines a menstrual disc with intravaginal electrical stimulation, targeting women who have found little relief with traditional medications.
The idea was born from personal experience. Founder Idris Mughal witnessed his sister suffer from debilitating menstrual pain for years. His co-founder, Antoine Podvin, had a similar motivation after seeing his wife struggle with chronic symptoms. Their shared mission: to develop a practical and effective solution for the estimated 70 million women globally whose pain remains untreated by conventional methods.
EVA works by blocking pain signals through electrical stimulation placed inside the vaginal canal, closer to the nerves than surface-based devices like TENS patches. This proximity offers stronger, faster relief. The device also collects menstrual flow, blending pain management with menstrual care seamlessly.
Initial patient tests showed promising results: one session of 30 minutes reduced intense pain, with effects lasting all day without medication. With a patent filed and early support from European clinicians and patient groups, Mirapulse is preparing for FDA approval and aims to launch commercially by 2029.
EVA could revolutionize care for women who’ve had no other options, offering not just relief, but empowerment.
