The SEARCH project (Synthetic healthcare data governance Hub) is poised to revolutionize digital health across Europe by harnessing the power of synthetic data and artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver safer, faster, and more personalized healthcare. Backed by the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI JU) and a consortium of 26 leading organizations from 14 countries, SEARCH is building a new ecosystem for the ethical generation, validation, and use of synthetic medical data.
Led by Trinity College Dublin through the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute, and with key partners like the Fundación TIC Salut Social, the project is rooted in a commitment to privacy-preserving innovation. SEARCH is developing advanced methods to create high-quality synthetic datasets—including clinical histories, genomic data, medical imaging, and biosignals—that replicate real-world datasets without compromising patient confidentiality.
SEARCH was recently presented at the Health Revolution Congress in Barcelona by Dr. Josep Munuera, highlighting its bold vision: synthetic data as the cornerstone of responsible and scalable AI innovation in healthcare. The project addresses key industry challenges by enabling meaningful data sharing within GDPR frameworks, enhancing research efficiency, and fostering legally and ethically transparent collaboration.
Key innovations include federated learning environments, synthetic data generation with clinical realism, and real-world applications focused on cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal conditions, and gynecologic cancers. Moreover, SEARCH will provide an ethical governance framework, regulatory-compliant validation tools, and open-source methodologies.
By 2028, SEARCH aims to deliver a federated platform for secure AI training, certified FAIR datasets, and actionable guidelines for the ethical use of synthetic data. Through the fusion of cutting-edge technology and strong ethical governance, SEARCH is setting a new paradigm for data-driven, trustworthy, and equitable healthcare across Europe.
